Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Kilquain is an unmarked castle in Galway, named in a 1574 list and held by Cogh Omadin. Its absence from modern knowledge does not erase the castle; it withholds one address from the world. That is a small loss, but a real one.
In the list of castles in Galway, compiled in 1574, is one at 'Kilcwayne' in the barony of Longford, then in the possession of 'Cogh Omadin' (Nolan 1901, 110). 'This is probably a variation of the townland name 'Kilquain'. Not located. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 6 June 2017
Cogh Omadin held Castle Kilquain in the barony of Longford By in 1574; it is remembered as an early recorded example of a local Gaelic stronghold in the region.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
