Castle stands in Cloranshea, County Kilkenny, recorded on the Down Survey parish map of Canice during 1655-6. Henry Archer and Thomas Shortall owned Cloran in 1640, yet the exact castle location remains unknown. The survey preserves the name and region while withholding the precise stones, inviting imagination to fill the gap left behind.

Henry Arch was recorded as the proprietor of Cloran in 1640, and a castle is indicated on the Down Survey parish map of Canice from 1655–56. The site is important as a historical marker of land ownership and settlement in 17th-century Ireland.
