Bawn in Lacken (crannagh By.)

On a gentle SW-facing slope in undulating pasture with a marshy area in the immediate vicinity. According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 198), 'Cappagh, otherwise Cappaghmore, otherwise Cappanagearagh, was forfeited by Henry Archer, Irish Papist, in 1653. Cappagh was an ancient manor to which Newtown, and Fowlingrath, now Holdensrath are mentioned as belonging. There was a castle here, of which some traces still remain'. On the 1st (1839-40) ed. OS 6-inch map the castle and bawn are indicated in Cappagh townland, subsequently the townland boundary was redrawn and by the 1945-6 revision of the OS 6-inch map the castle and bawn are in Lacken townland. A rectangular area (52m NW-SE x 45m NE-SW) enclosed by an earthen bank, largely denuded and overgrown but best preserved at SW (Wth 2.65m; H 1.5m). There is a shallow infilled fosse on the NW side, a field drain on the SW side (Wth 1.5m) and a stream at NE and SE (channel Wth 2m; D 1.25m). Two stone causeways, one across the stream at the N end of the NE side (Wth 3.5m) and the other across the drain at the S end of the SW side (Wth 4.2m) form entrances. Both are retained with stone. They may be original but have been modified. The remains of a castle (KK019-001001-) are visible in the centre of the enclosed area.
