Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Cloonscott still hides the castle taken from a guilty man in 1603, depriving him of one cartron of land without preserving the shape of his loss. The case travelled to Granard, where a court condemned him and the crown seized his house. Nothing visible marks the place now, but the sudden vacancy suggests a building sturdy enough to threaten the state.
An Inquisition at Granard on the 10th of January 1603 recorded that 'Jac' keagh Mc. Hug' O'Ferrall' was found guilty of treason was was seised of '1 castr' [castle] & 1 cartron' of land in Clownswotie' (Anon. 1826, Inq. 1 Jac 1). Not located.
