What is recorded here
Castle, ringwork in Shanbally (lisronagh Par.) stands as a triangular stone bank beside a deep fosse, marked locally as Lonergan's Fort and perhaps originally a burial place rather than a fighting home. Its straight southern edge and rounded northern point still cut across the pasture ridge, while a low mound in the southeast ditch may have carried a bridge into the enclosed space. The broken eastern bank and worn northern face suggest long human use, maybe seasonal residence, maybe ritual memory, before field boundaries and grazing softened its edges.
On a broad flat ridge on ground sloping gently in every direction except to W, in pasture. Triangular-shaped enclosure (diam. 40m N-S; 42.2m E-W) surrounded by a stoney bank (Wth 1.2m crest, 3.7m base; int. H 0.39m; ext. H 2.3m), the outer face of which has been truncated and which falls steeply to the enclosing wide, deep fosse (Wth 6m; D 2.2m). The S quadrant is straight-sided, running E-W. The bank in the N quadrant forms a rounded point. There is some erosion of the outer face of the bank in the N and NE sector. The bank in the E quadrant has collapsed out for a length of 3m. A substantial field boundary runs concentrically with the enclosure on the W and S sides. There is no clearly defined entrance, however in the SE quadrant there is a low mound in the fosse which may have supported a bridge/drawbridge to the ringwork. This monument is depicted on Lyons (1937, 243, 248-9) map of Lisronagh, he mentions that the monument is called 'Lonergan's Fort' and was "probably originally sepulchral".
