Castle, motte in Ballybrophy is a vanished castle mound in County Laois, remembered only through Cunningham’s description of a Well Field and Walsh’s lost identification. The earth may have been farmed flat, buried under grass or taken for an ordinary rise, yet the field still holds the shape of human ambition. To walk Ballybrophy now is to pass the place where a castle stood before memory retired it.

Unlocated motte within in townland, described by Cunningham as the 'Well Field in which it is situated also contained a mound identified by Walsh as a motte which cannot now be located' (Cunningham 1987, 161). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007
