What is recorded here
Indicated is a knoll in County Mayo pasture, fenced into a rough circle and dotted with brambles. It faces east toward wet boggy ground while a small stream runs west, giving the place a clear divide between dry height and drowning flatness. The fence may be recent, but the view is old enough to stop a person mid-thought.
In pasture, located on rising ground with very good views. There is a small stream 180m to W and a flat expanse of wet boggy ground to E.
Indicated as a tree-planted circular enclosure on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; and as a penannular area defined by a field boundary, open to W, on the 1919 edition.
The remains consist of a rise or small knoll on the E-facing slope of a ridge. A field fence has been scarped into base of the knoll, following its circular contour from NW−SW, enclosing an area of diameter c. 40m. The domed interior space has a flattish top or central area (diam. c. 10-12m) from which the slope inclines outwards, most steeply to E.
This does not appear to be a rath. It is possible that the top of the knoll was used as a habitation site in the past but there is no definitive evidence of this now. The field fence enclosing the base of the knoll appears to be of relatively recent date. The remains as they now exist suggest a natural knoll which was enclosed in the modern era. It is dotted with clumps of brambles with hawthorn bushes around the perimeter.
There is a rath (MA080-003----) 40m to SW.
