Fulacht fia in Carrowgilpatrick

In wet pasture, located in a sheltered hollow adjacent to a natural spring, at the base of a ridge slope on the W side of a flat-bottomed valley. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of 1.5km along the base of the valley. at the base of an E-facing slope adjacent to a NE-flowing stream/drain. When first visited this appeared as a sod-covered, compact sub-circular mound (15.4m NE-SW; 13m NW-SE; H 0.8m at NE, 1.4m at SW) composed of heat-shattered stone in a charcoal-rich matrix (OPW field notes 1994). The trough may have been located on the N side where the mound is lower and slightly slumped. The mound was partly levelled during land reclamation in 1995.
