Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Carrowgarriff South

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Carrowgarriff South holds a broken stone ring on an east-facing slope, cut in two by a laneway that still carries traffic through what was once a closed fort. The western wall survives beneath field rubble and vegetation while the eastern half has vanished entirely, as if the road did not merely pass through but consumed the place. Whatever life moved inside that circle was erased by the same practical force that makes roads: the need to go somewhere else.
On an E-facing rocky slope in pastureland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 267, no. 24) as a circular ‘Stone fort’ (diam. c. 27m), which was cut by a laneway. The latter runs through the cashel from NNE to SSW and no visible surface trace of the enclosing element survives to the E of it. To its W, the overgrown cashel wall is evident but field-clearance rubble has been piled on top of it. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 24 January 2017
