Man-made underground passage in Carrigaline Middle

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Carrigaline Middle holds a vanished underground passage inside a levelled ringfort. Local memory claims the tunnel caved in repeatedly, erasing its entrance and purpose. That repeated collapse suggests a narrow, unstable bore rather than a grand chamber, perhaps cut for drainage, exclusion or secret movement. The earth kept taking it back.
In levelled ringfort (CO087-030----). According to local information, 'Man-made underground passage caved in on several occassions'. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
