Carrickastickan in County Armagh, Ireland, contains a rath: an earthen ring built by human hands and still standing beside the land that shaped it. The name sounds like a cart button, but the place is older than cartoons. A rath is a room without walls, a boundary drawn in soil. It may have held a family, a herdsman, a keeper of goats or a small lord who answered to no one. The ground remembers shape long after tools break.
