Newtownbarry House

Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge with half-dormer attic, extant 1839, on a T-shaped plan centred on single-bay single-storey gabled projecting porch. "Improved", ----, producing present composition. Now in ruins. Pitched roofs now missing, rendered red brick Running bond central diagonal chimney stack having cut-granite beaded stringcourse below lichen-spotted cut-granite capping, and no rainwater goods surviving on slate flagged eaves. Part creeper- or ivy-covered coursed rubble stone walls originally rendered or roughcast with cut- or hammered granite flush quoins to corners. Central door opening into gate lodge. Square-headed window openings with lichen-spotted cut-granite sills, and red brick block-and-start surrounds supporting cut- or hammered granite lintels with no fittings surviving. Set back from line of road at entrance to grounds of Newtownbarry House.

The ruined shell of a gate lodge not only contributing positively to the group and setting values of the Newtownbarry House estate, but also surviving as an interesting relic of the preceding Woodfield estate sold (1854) by Somerset Richard Maxwell (1803-84), eighth Baron Farnham, through the Encumbered Estates Court (cf. 15602008 - 15602011).
