Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Camas

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Camas, County Limerick: a 35m circular rath with an earthen bank, outer fosse and north-west gap, now hidden under bushes and rough pasture. It is the kind of place where people may have kept fire, tools or children close while the land around remained open. The names suggest more than measurement: a fort for beings nobody admitted, and a rath for humans who could be asked to leave.
In level pasture. Circular area (diam. 35m) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.3m) with external fosse (Wth 1.2m; D 0.4m), both covered by overgrowth of bushes. Gap (Wth 3.2m) in bank at NW. Interior level and under rough pasture. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
