Dense gorse hid the cairns from earlier viewers until a mountain fire in 2010 exposed two distinct fields on Ballycrinnigan. Each small kerbed mound stands about as high as a kneeling person and marks a place where people may have set stones for the dead, for prayer or for memory. The field is not a single showpiece but a scattered company of mounds, visible together only because the mountain gave way.

Recorded by Brindley and Kilfeather (1993, 8 (entry 56)) as follows: 'three groups of small cairns with kerbs (diam. c. 2m, H c. 0.8m). Masked by dense vegetation at time of inspection.' Following a gorse fire on the mountain in 2010 two distinct cairnfields were identified and the individual cairns were recorded by Ó Murchú (2011, 63-83) as part of a Master's thesis. Bronze Age cairnfield, likely dating to the early to middle first millennium BCE. Such cairnfields are significant as they provide evidence of ritual or funerary activity and land use in prehistoric landscapes.
