What is recorded here

Indicated is a modern drystone enclosure in County Clare, measured at twenty-two metres across and standing beside a hidden holy well. It is not an ancient monument misread by distance; it is a recent human boundary built on karst soil where water still moves beneath the grass. The wall does not claim to be old, but it shapes the place, giving the land an edge and the well a neighbour.

Situated in an area of karst with some grass cover. A small ridge rises c. 50m to the N. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). On inspection in 1998 this was found to be a modern enclosure (diam. c. 22m) defined by a drystone wall (H 1.4m). A holy well (CL009-006001-) and penitential station (CL009-006002-) lie c. 90m to the W. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 15 February 2016
