Building in Scurlockstown (deece Lower By.)

Situated on a gentle W-facing slope, and located c. 100m SW of the site of the tower house (ME037-011----). Archaeological testing and excavation (01E0316) uncovered the foundations of a rectangular building (int. dims 5.6m NW-SE; 3m NE-SW) defined by the fragmentary outer face of a wall and a slightly sunken clay floor, oxidized in places. There may have been a porch at NW, and there were three areas of distinctive cobbling outside to the SW, W and NW. A SE-NW ditch or open drain (max. Wth 2m; max. D 0.5m) ran past the NE wall. Sherds of seventeenth and eighteenth century pottery, clay pipe stems, and residual medieval sherds were recovered from the thin topsoil.
