Barrow

In rough mountain pasture on NE-facing slope. Circular mound (11m N-S; 9.8m E-W; H 1.2m) enclosed by shallow fosse with external earthen bank (H 0.4m).Top of mound dug into leaving hollow (max. D 0.4m). On going reclamation cuts into outer edge of bank. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Barrow, ring-barrow in Coom (hudson) is a Bronze Age ring barrow, characterized by a circular mound with an enclosing fosse and external bank. Its significance lies in its typical form of early funerary monument in the British Isles, often associated with single inhumation burials.
