What is recorded here
Barrow is a barrow (ring-barrow) in Ballynagrana (emly Par.), County Tipperary, Ireland. A 1935 excavation revealed a circular structure about 5 metres across, defined by a fosse and outer bank, but no burials appeared. Three shallow pockets, each about 0.6 metres long, held dark humified soil and may have contained dissolved cremated remains.
In level improved pasture. Not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch map but archaeological excavation here in 1935 revealed a circular ring-barrow (diam. c. 5m) defined by a fosse and outer bank (Ó Ríordáin 1936, 183-4). No burials were found. The excavation 'revealed three peculiar pockets in the original ground-surface filled with dark humified soil. Each about 2 feet [0.6m] in length and consisted of a circular part, 6-inches in diameter, and a long narrow portion about 3-inches [0.07m] in width, this latter part being filled with material somewhat lighter in colour because less humified. The maximum depth of these pockets was only 2½-inches [0.06m]. Their purpose is not clear; one might suggest their having contained deposits of cremated remains that had been completely dissolved by soil-acids, but this is only surmise (ibid. 184). No surface trace now visible at ground level.
