What is recorded here
Barnastooka holds a collapsed oval hut built against the inside of a larger enclosure, its dry stones rising only forty centimetres above the ground. The narrow shape suggests a small shelter rather than a grand home, perhaps used by someone who needed warmth at night or a place to store tools during stormy weather. It still fits the hill, even though the roof is gone and the walls have fallen inward.
New site identified by John Cronin & Associates (JCA) under Licence No. 16E0127 prior to wind farm development in Barnastooka, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry by ESB Wind Development Ltd. The remains of a roughly oval hut site, long axis aligned NW-SE, and consisting of collapsed dry-stones (ITM grid co-ord. 505568, 571306). It is built against inside of NICH36 settlement enclosure on the south, with an arc of set stones defining it on the north. Its overall length is not clear as it is difficult to tell how far to the southeast it extends. Its maximum length is 3.5m (NW-SE) and its width is 2.5m (NE-SW). The height of the collapsed structure is 0.4m.
