Indicated

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a defaced cashel on exposed Clare grazing, overlooking the sea half a kilometre west. Its later drystone wall stands beside a spread of older stones, while a large glacial boulder watches from the south. The fort may have been one of several lost at Shanbally, remembered only through a name, a boulder and the chance that someone still sees it.
On level but exposed rough grazing overlooking the sea c. 300m to the W. An enclosure (CL004-046----) is located c. 65m to the ESE. Not recorded on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map but indicated on the later Cassini edition (1915). Listed as ‘cashel’ in the RMP (1996). Probably referred to by Westropp (1905, 345) as one of ‘some seven or eight defaced forts at a place called Shanbally in Ballyryan, towards the sea’ A subcircular area (int. diams. 23m E-W; 20m N-S) is defined by a later drystone wall ((H c. 1.5m; T 0.8-1m) which is built on a spread of stones which may be the remains of an older cashel wall. A large glacial boulder stands outside at S. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Lynda McCormack Date of upload: 7 November 2022
