What is recorded here
Indicated is a subrectangular cashel in County Clare where four different walls meet, suggesting people kept rebuilding the same boundary across centuries. The western double-faced stone wall still stands taller than the eastern drystone additions, while a broad southern bank buries older work beneath grass. Two other cashels sit within a few hundred metres, implying a small cluster of occupied or contested ground rather than a lonely marker. The varying heights and materials preserve a sequence of choices: strengthen the west, widen the south, patch the east, and leave the interior raised for living.
On a gentle N-facing slope in rough pasture within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-059001-). Partly outlined on the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. This subrectangular cashel (int. dims. 25m NNW-SSE; 23.7m ENE-WSW; ext. dims. 34m NNW-SSE; 29.6m ENE-WSW) is defined by a different enclosing element on each side. At the W is a double-faced wall (Wth 1.8m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.7m). At the S there is a wide bank of grass-covered stones (Wth 5.8m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 0.4m). A probable later drystone wall (H 1.4m) defines the N perimeter, with material accumulated against its inner face. At the E there is also a probable later drystone wall (ext. H 1.2m) backing on to an accumulation of material, which appears to have a double-faced wall (est. Wth c. 2.3m; H c. 0.5m) at its core. The level raised area of the cashel interior continues c. 2.2m to the E of this wall, before terminating at a NNW-SSE scarp (H 0.6m; Wth 0.8m). Another cashel (CL009-202----) lies c. 80m to the NE. Ballykinvarga cashel (CL009-059012-) lies c. 153m to the SE.
