Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Ballydooley, County Roscommon, Ireland. The 1837 Ordnance Survey map marked the site as an oval enclosure on a gentle northwest-facing slope beside an extensive southern quarry. The grass-covered area now measures twenty-eight metres across and contains a low scarp rather than a visible entrance or surrounding ditch.
Marked as an oval enclosure (dims c. 40m N-S; c. 30m E-W) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a gentle NW-facing slope with an extensive quarry immediately to the S. This is an irregularly-shaped, grass-covered area (dims 28m N-S; 28m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 0.4-0.8m) which has been quarried back SSW-N-ENE and at E. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. Rath (RO034-089----) is c. 180m to the WSW. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
