Ballyculhane Castle kept a salmon weir in repair during the 1654-56 Civil Survey, binding Patrick Purcell’s lands to the river’s brutal generosity. The precise stones have vanished, but water still moves through Ballyculhane, carrying the shape of that lost trap.

The precise location of a Salmon weir belonging to Ballyculhane Castle (LI012-010002-) in the townland of Ballyculhane has not been identified. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that Major General Patrick Purcell, an Irish Papist was the owner of the lands of Ballyculhane which contained 'a Castle, a Bawne three greate houses and ten Cottages one Mill seate, one Salmon weare in repayre besides other weare seates, oweing a red rose p[er] Ann[um] to the Mannor house of Aghdare' (Simington 1938, 346).
