Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyconnell

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half the fort has been swallowed into a field bank, yet the remaining earth and stone still mark a small circular chamber in the corner of a Kerry field. Its wide base and narrow eastern gap suggest a place built for exclusion as much as shelter. The fairy fort name may be folklore, but the shape is not; it is a human boundary, partially erased and still standing.
Internal diameter 16.5m N-S, 16m E-W A small univallate ringfort, it consists of a circular area enclosed by a low, wide earth and stone bank. It is situated in the corner of a field, and the N through W to S sectors of the enclosing bank have been incorporated into a fieldbank. The enclosing bank is 7m wide at the base; it rises to 1m above the interior and 1.6m above the external ground level. A 2m wide gap exists to the E and provides access to the interior. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 729. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
