Crannog in Ballinwing is a grass-covered island twenty metres wide inside Carrickslavan Lough, a turlough that appears and disappears with the rain. It rises fifteen centimetres above the water, made of earth and stone, yet no wall, hole or built edge is visible. The lough swallows the land in winter and returns it in summer, forcing whoever lived there to read the water instead of trusting a fixed shore.

Located in the floodplain of Carrickslavan Lough, which is a turlough (diam. c. 300-400m). It is visible as an island in the turlough on aerial photographs (GSIAP: G 156-7). This is a grass-covered subcircular area (dims 20m x 16m; H 1.5m) composed of earth and stone, but with no visible evidence of artificial construction.
