Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinbrittig

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts and hidden chambers still feature in local story, though no chamber has been identified at this site. The fort itself is easy to see: a level circular area about thirty-three metres across, enclosed by an earth and stone bank nearly two metres high. That much size and shape leave little room for doubt about what was built there. What is missing is not the fort but the life led inside it.
In pasture, on SSW-facing slope. Circular area (33m N-S; 32m E-W) enclosed by earth and stone bank (H 1.8m). Interior planted with trees. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
