Baldwinstown bawn still stands as a detached SE wall ending in a round tower, separate from the tower house yet leading into it. That gap suggests a changed doorway, a redirected entrance or a boundary rebuilt after the first house stopped being the centre of local life. The missing western part may have been consumed by fields, river work or forgetting, but the surviving tower and wall preserve the shape of a place that once controlled access, sight and movement beside a stream.

A bawn wall (L 5.4m; incomplete H c. 5m) is running SE from the E angle of Baldwinstown tower house (WX047-022001-), but it is not bonded to it. The wall terminates in a circular tower (ext. diam. c. 3.5m; H c. 7m) entered from the wall walk of the bawn wall. The bawn lay to the W, between the tower house and a N-S stream, but there is no other evidence of it. Archaeological testing (96E0359) c. 30m to the E of the tower house produced no related material (Scully 1996a, b). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 11 October, 2013

Baldwinstown Tower is a 15th- or 16th-century tower house associated with the Butler family, who were prominent in the region during the medieval period. It is remembered as part of the defensive architecture of the time and for its connection to the powerful Butler earls of Ormond.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
