Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Baile An Mhuilinn (corca Dhuibhne)

Internal diam. 20.4m N-S, 23.1m E-W A univallate rath situated on the W side of Dingle Harbour, in fairly level pastureland about 125m from Owenlisaduneela stream. The circular interior is enclosed by a single bank, with faint traces of a fosse along the S sector. The latter is only a few cms deep and c. 1.5m wide. The bank is .9 to 1.61m high internally, 1.45 to 1.9m high externally and 1.34 to 1.81m wide at base. For most of its circumference it is revetted internally and externally with poorly-constructed drystone walling, and section of the bank in the W sector has been reduced to a low mound now overlain by a wall entirely of drystone construction. A 2.5m wide entrance gap at NE has been blocked with drystone walling. A 2nd gap at SE measures 2.25m in width and is defined to E by a modern gate-pillar. The above description is derived from J. A univallate earthen ringfort (fairy fort) located west of Dingle Harbour, likely dating to the early medieval period, used as a defensive or agricultural homestead. Local folklore associates such sites with the supernatural, often referring to them as "fairy forts" believed to be inhabited by fairies or other otherworldly beings.
