Architectural fragment in Gaggan

Architectural fragment

What is recorded here

Gaggan holds a farm building where cut church stones reappear in door and window openings. The owner claimed they came from a nearby church in the early 1900s, turning a sacred wall into a working threshold. That much is local testimony rather than proven fact, but it gives the place a strange continuity: old prayer may have become daily passage, and the house still wears the church in its edges.
Numerous fragments of cut stone reused in door and window opes of farm building; according to owner, stones removed from church (CO110-023----) in early 20th century. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
