Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ahawilk

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Ahawilk holds a vanished ringfort where cattle now graze. The earth still marks a thirty-metre circle, but ploughs and patience have reduced the fort to a low ridge and shallow ditch. What was defensible became decorative, then invisible, then a rumour in the soil. The fairies kept the shape longer than the people did.
In pasture, on gentle W-facing slope. Enclosure has been levelled and incorporated into pasture field but is still discernible as low rise (H 0.1m; Wth 5.8m) with shallow external fosse (D 0.1m; Wth 1.2m) enclosing circular area (diam. 30m). Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
