Abbeycartron is no longer visible in County Longford, but it is the place where Thomas Allen stood at the gallows in 1641. Ralph Griffin remembered that Allen was taken wet and wounded from the town gaol, held through two days, then brought to the gallows by order of a committee of war. The exact spot has been lost, yet the witness kept the shape of the event: a man broken by water and wounds, still forced to face the rope.

In Longford town (LF013-026----). The presence of a gallows is recorded in the depositions about the 1641 massacre of English settlers in Longford. Ralph Griffin stated that Thomas Allen 'was conveyed over to the town gaol [LF013-026009-], wet and wounded, as he was, and kept in a dungeon from the Thursday night till Saturday morning following, and then conveyed to the gallows by order of a committee of war' (Hickson 1884, vol. 1, 352).
