Rathwire Castle rose on a low mound beside Killucan when Hugh de Lacy claimed the land, perhaps replacing an older fortress called Rath Guaire. Stone fragments still lie hidden inside the earthworks, waiting for rain or curiosity to reveal them. The deed changed hands among powerful families, but the mound remains, holding every promise and betrayal like a jar of dark water.

Situated in a low rise of ground 440m SSW of St. Etchen's Church (WM020-128----) and the village of Killucan. Rathwire motte and bailey castle (WM020-125001-) possibly built by Hugh de Lacy between 1182-7 on the site of an earlier fortress known as Rath Guaire (O'Donovan 1856, 970; Adams 1960, 31; Brady 1961, 39-40). The territory of Killucan was granted by Sir Hugh De Lacy to Sir Robert de Lacy and during the reign of Edward I (1272-1307) these de Lacy lands were granted to Mortimer, Earl of March and later during the reign of Edward III (1327-77), the lands were granted to Sir John D'Arcy, Chief Governor of Ireland (Cogan 1867, 434). A stone castle is depicted standing immediately S of the motte on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and masonry fragments of this stone castle possibly of 13th century date can be seen standing in the fosse of the motte (Adams 1960, 31). No foundations are visible of this stone castle which may have been a later medieval structure standing in the bailey which was enclosed by an earthen bank and external fosse. Built by Hugh de Lacy between 1182 and 1187, Rathwire Moat & Castle, Rathwire Upper is an important example of early Norman military architecture in Ireland. Its strategic location reflects the expansion of Norman influence into the Midlands during the late 12th century.
