Rathmore Castle

Rathmore Castle rises as a four-storey circular limestone tower in County Offaly, its 1.7-metre walls and gun loops marking it as an O'Carroll defensive stronghold. The eastern side has collapsed, ivy smothers the upper square rooms, and a Victorian house now sits along the line of the lost bawn wall. What remains is not a polished monument but a bruised, living structure: stone corbels, tall chimney stacks and a broken ring of enclosure still holding the shape of the family's power.
