RAISED RATH in Balloo

RAISED RATH

What is recorded here

Balloo still holds a raised rath, an earthen ring from the early Christian period that men built with bare hands and memory. It stands scheduled in County Down, not as a dead shape but as a living boundary between ordinary ground and older thought. Perhaps children once ran its rim at dusk, believing the soil remembered every footfall. The ring remains complete enough to suggest pride, patience and purpose, even when every name and date has dissolved into rain.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as RAISED RATH. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. Recorded protection: Scheduled. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
