What is recorded here

One chamber of the castle still smells of wet rope and wood shavings. A quay lay west of the castle, close enough for a boatman to throw a line through a chamber window. That much distance turns a port into a living room. Goods, gossip and danger could all climb the same stairs. The castle did not overlook the water, it interrupted it.
