Quarry in Commons South

Situated on open karst c. 3m NW of a large glacial erratic. Listed in the RMP (1996) as ‘Grave-slab’. This is a headstone (L 1.94m; Wth 0.63-0.63m; T 0.1-0.15m) that was being manufactured at this location and was probably intended for use elsewhere. The upper surface is perfectly smooth but there is no inscription. The sides are roughly finished and the back is uneven and natural with solution holes. One end is nicely rounded and the corners at the other end are broken. In 1986 it was thought that there was some indecipherable lettering on the stone (Coffey 1986, 58). Similar locations where graveslabs or headstones were quarried in the 18th century are known further north (see for example CL010-213---- and CL010-237----).
