What is recorded here

The precise location of a limestone or marble quarry in the townland of Caherline or Ballyhobin has not been identified. The Civil Survey of 1654-56 recorded that in 'Carlyne and Balliobyne one pl. wh. a stone house a Bawen and a marbell quarrie thereunto' (Simington 1938, 74). In 1641 this quarry was located on the lands of Connor Clancie of Ballibrickyn who is listed as an 'Irish Papist'. The stone in this quarry may have been used by the sculptors of the 17th century memorials in Abington graveyard (LI014-014002-). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 4 July 2017
