Nearly one hundred people drowned or bled out in the River Bann during November 1641 after armed Irishmen stripped them at swordpoint on a bridge. The victims were mostly English Protestants from Loughall, marched under false promises of expulsion before the cruelty revealed itself. Some struggled against musket fire while others sank into icy darkness, leaving behind a wound that still marks the county.
