Pit-burial in Curraheen (condons and Clongibbon By.) — Report the wrong picture

What is recorded here

Curraheen holds a tiny oval pit where charcoal and cremated bone belonged to a young adult, buried beside a circular enclosure still visible in the pasture. The pit is small enough to fit inside a kitchen table, yet it preserves the end of a life lived near that ancient boundary. Development nearly erased it in 1992, but the dark-grey soil and broken bone remained deep enough to be recognised.

In undulating pastureland, on gentle NW-facing slope. In 1992 oval pit (0.25m x 0.3m) discovered during removal of topsoil prior to development. Surviving depth of pit (c. 0.12m) filled with dark-grey sandy soil, containing charcoal and cremated bone; bone derives from at least one young adult (Byrne and Sleeman 1992, 10). Circular enclosure (CO019-069---) in same field c. 60m to SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
