Phoenix Park

Cast-iron turnstile, erected c.1870, comprising three pivoting turnstile compartments, railed and partially enclosed to either side by round-plan fixed rails resting on balled feet, spanned and affixed to single rail support carried by boundary wall on either side. Single pedestrian entrance between turnstile compartments. Leads to sweeping flight of granite steps to higher ground above, accessed by original granite flagstones, steps arranged in six groups of three, enclosed at both sides by retaining wall of uncoursed squared granite with ovolo-moulded granite coping. Further bounded to one side by steel railings, original painted cast-iron railings to other. Upper section comprises gravel steps with limestone kerbs and limestone surrounds. Cast-iron Victorian-style lamp standard with copper lantern at top of steps on entering Phoenix Park.

A simple nineteenth-century group of turnstiles set within the southern boundary of Phoenix Park. While the ironwork and masonry surround are plainly detailed, the robust materials continue to serve their original function. One of several nineteenth-century park entrances, this attractive pedestrian entrance contributes to the wide variety of structures that enhance the grounds of Phoenix Park.
