Penitential station in Quakerstown

Immediately W of a holy well (CL011-006----) in an area of level karstic pavement. A suboval penitential cairn (5.1m N-S; 4.5m E-W; H 0.7-1.3m) generally made of fist-fized stones, among which blackthorn trees have taken root. The base of the cairn is grass-covered. Brew (1998, 57) suggested that this cairn was either formed by pilgrims and penitents, who often brought stones to holy wells as token offerings, or that it might be a burial cairn.
