According to Cuppage (1986, 324, no. 858), 'about 350m along the seashore to N [of Kilshannig Church (KE027-002001-)], there is a large boulder, Cloch an Turais, which was formerly a place of pilgrimage on Good Friday (An Seabhac 1939, 267).' This site, known as Cloch an Turais, was a place of pilgrimage on Good Friday, where penitents would walk barefoot along the shore as an act of devotion. The tradition reflects broader Celtic Christian practices of penitential walking associated with holy stations along the coast of Ireland.
