Sixty metres east of the great mound, faint surface marks and aerial shadows hint at a smaller forgotten chamber. O'Kelly marked it Z1, but no one has opened it to prove whether stone rooms hide beneath the grass. The landscape keeps this much back, holding a second tomb in reserve while the main chamber takes all the light and attention.

Aerial photographs and surface indications suggest that there might be a possible small passage-tomb some 60m E of the main mound (ME019-045----) at Newgrange (O'Kelly et. al. 1978, 251). Identified by O'Kelly (1978, 48) as Site Z1 in his Guide to Newgrange. Passage tomb; Neolithic period (c. 3200–2500 BCE). Part of the Brú na Bóinne complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and associated with early megalithic funerary and ceremonial traditions in Ireland.
