Oldcourt Castle is a four-storey tower house in County Wicklow, held from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries by the Archbolds and later the Walshes of Carrickmines under the Earls of Ormond. Built from uncoursed rubble with dressed granite and limestone corners, it rises about 21 metres on a natural platform above a steep stream valley. Its north entrance tower, intramural passage, spiral staircase and ogee-headed windows show how defence and domestic life shared one narrow stone body. The surviving bawn wall and two gate towers suggest a wider household, while the possible seventeenth-century hall attached to the west wall points to a castle learning to become a house.
