Old Burial Ground

Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as rectangular field (c. 45m ENE-WSW; c. 55m SSE-NNW) named 'Old Burial Ground'; field shown on 1905 and 1936 OS 6-inch maps but not named. In SW quadrant of possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (13900). Rectangular field defined to W by farm buildings and stone wall; stone wall continues along W end of S side; elsewhere enclosed by stone-faced earthen bank, most substantial to N (ext. H 1.4m) where it borders road. No visible surface trace of burials or burial markers. Bowman (1934, 18) noted grass-covered mounds, possibly indicating church (14497) on N side of burial ground and 'Ten headstones, varying from 8 to 12 inches high, mark the sites of graves'. Possibly the same burial ground as that mentioned by Grove White (1905-25, vol. 1, 128) 'At Kilgoban is a rath used from time immemorial as a burial place for stillborn children'. Early medieval ecclesiastical cemetery, likely 7th to 10th century. Its location suggests association with a monastic or Christian settlement, indicating the presence of an early religious community in the area.
