Ogham stone in Mangerton

Ogham stone

What is recorded here

Diarmait's pillar-stone stood beside a grave-like enclosure on Mangerton slopes before the Earl of Dunraven carried it to Adare Manor. Tradition claims it came from The Priest's Leap, while its broken top hides the beginning of a name still visible in NEGNI. The stone may have marked a dead person, a boundary or a memory someone wanted kept sharp.
An ogham stone, recorded by Windele from 'by a grave like enclosure' on the slopes of Mangerton Co. Kerry, was brought to Adare Manor (see LI021-034001-) by the Earl of Dunraven in the 19th century (Macalister 1945, 217, no. 222). 1.93 x 0.01 x 0.01m (converted from Macalister 1945) it was known locally under the name Dallan Diarmada `Diarmait's pillar-stone', and according to tradition had been brought to the find spot from a place called `The Priest's Leap'. The beginning of the inscription was broken off in antiquity. Macalister (1945, 217, no. 222) read it as …(N)EGGNI…. (Byrne 2009, no. 1222) Compiled by: Nora White Date of upload: 23 February 2017
