What is recorded here
Not shown is a fulacht fia in County Limerick. It is one of six nearby sites and still lies unexcavated beneath the soil. The other five have opened to view, but this one waits for hands, patience and a different kind of digging.
One of a group of six fulachtaí fia (LI013-229-/230/231/232/233/234----). This unexcavated fulacht fia (Site D) was discovered by Noel Dunne during archaeological monitoring under licence No. 98E0433 of a dual carriageway constructed as part of the Dell Factory Development, County Limerick (Dunne 2000, 159). The results of the discovery were summarised as following; ‘The factory construction site is on the demesne of Roche Castle an early 19th-century house. Most of the features encountered in the monitoring of groundworks (Phase 2) relate to farming activity associated with the house. However, to the southwest of the site a fulacht fiadh was uncovered in the digging of a trench for a temporary telecom supply to tho contractor's compound. The ploughed-out burnt spread lies immediately under the sod and is 15, 19m long and 0.1, 0.55m thick. The feature is outside the area of development, and the trench was backfilled following examination and recording’ (www.excavations.ie 1999, No. 483).
