What is recorded here

No visible castle exists at Tibber, yet the Down Survey marked one in 1656. That absence is the shape of the place: a building removed from the field but preserved inside a drawn boundary. It may have fallen before the surveyors arrived, or they may have recorded a castle known only through older memory. Either way, Tibber keeps a ghost structure alive without giving it a wall to touch.
A possible castle is depicted on the Down Survey (1655-6) map of Abbeyshrule parish (NLI, MS 719), in the townland of ‘Tibber part of Kappoge’. Its precise location has not been identified. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 8 October 2012
