Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

ntified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme and set aside for resolution as Ballycarrigeen Lower 1 (Hardy et al. 2010, 57-8). It is situated in a slight col between a rising incline to the SE and a slight rise c. 500m to the W. It was excavated (E4231) by M. McNamara who uncovered burnt stone material (dims 11.3m plus; x c 1.9m; T 0.06m) in three related deposits with a subrectangular trough (dims 1.98m x 1.2m; D 0.2m) beneath. The upper levels of the mound were disturbed by drains and there was a NE-SW depression (Wth 2.2-3.2m; D 0.1-0.4m; exposed L 5.72m) that can be interpreted as modern disturbance. A sample from the trough produced a C14 date of Cal. BC 1426-1268. Fulacht fia (WX011-071----) is c. 55m to the WNW and fulacht fia (WX011-073----) is c. 100m to the SW. (McNamara 2012; 2013) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 26 November, 2013
