Noël Browne was born on 20 December 1915 at Bath Street in Waterford city. He entered politics to expose tuberculosis after the disease killed his parents and most of his siblings, then waged a successful campaign against it while continuing medical work in sanatoria. His refusal to abandon the Mother and Child Scheme caused his resignation in 1951, yet he remained a restless progressive voice across five parties and two houses for three decades.
